Businesses are asked to share views on streamlining the authorisation process for regulated food and feed products.
Consultation opens to simplify regulated product approval process
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Food Standards Scotland (FSS) are seeking views on the proposed changes to the authorisation process for regulated food and feed products.
These products include things like:
- food and feed additives
- flavourings
- novel foods
- food and feed containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs)
- food contact materials
The current system, inherited from the European Union, is not seen to be keeping up with changes in the food industry. The proposals in this consultation look at:
- removing renewal requirements for feed additives, food or feed containing, consisting of or produced from GMOs and smoke flavourings
- allowing regulated product authorisations to come into effect on publication, likely to an official register, following a ministerial decision

The FSA and FSS are asking businesses, industry groups, and others to give feedback on these proposals, which will begin modernising the regulated products service. Further changes are potentially expected in the future.
